In the Zambian curriculum at the end of each year, examinations are held for pupils in 7th grade for them to qualify to 8th grade which is a transition from primary education to secondary education. At the end of 2015 83 girls being supported by Academic Work sat for this exam.

96% of the girls performed very well but we have one that performed extremely well, Maureen Kumbuyo. Maureen scored 800 marks out of 1000. She has been accepted at the only female technical school in Southern Province, Nikko Technical Secondary School. Maureen is 14 years old, she lost her parents when she was 3 years old. She has been raised by her grandparents(mother’s parents). Life has not been easy for Maureen as her grandparents are very old and they do not work. The family of 8 depends on Maureen’s aunt who stays within Livingstone. Maureen has been receiving support for 3 years now and has really shown her appreciation for the support by working so hard and being the top of her class. She has also been an active member of the children’s council, meaning she has been representing her fellow pupils during important school meeting and has been a part of the decision making process for issues that concern the school. Her performance was always noted every year during awarding ceremonies at Response Network as she was always¬†among the best students of the year.

She is so happy about her achievement and we will soon hear how she is settling in boarding school.
